REnewing a Lease

After a new device connects to the network,
I get the following:
DHCP DISCOVER
DHCP OFFER
DHCP REQUEST and then
DHCP ACK

When a device renews it lease, is it the same process?
Of is it different?

I caught one device doing

DHCP REQUEST and then
DHCP ACK

then my next question is, if a device is trying to renew it lease, does it use the DHCP DISCOVER...DHCPOFFER only?
Does the router think its a new device and not a re-newal?

Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm trying to figure out why the LIFX bulbs drop off line after a day or so.

Figured so, what happens if a device does the DHCP DISCOVER? I see my router responded with DHCP OFFER, and the conversation ends.

so it would seem that the device is not correctly renewing a lease by protocol.

A client will send a DHCP DISCOVER when it connects to the network. This is not the same process as a lease renewal.
